“Seagulls of the morning sea” would be a more accurate representation of the original Korean title (아침바다 갈매기는). “The Land of the Morning Calm” foregoes seagulls in favor of a familiar moniker for Korea derived from the Sino-Korean characters for Joseon (朝鮮), but this swap doesn’t really impact the serene tone the creators intended. The main poster featuring a fishing boat floating on calm waters with seagulls on the horizon says it all, and you can almost take in a breath of the crisp morning air. But what’s especially interesting about the title is the irony. Doesn’t the sea look placid? Well, that’s just the calm before the storm. You can see in the trailer that the events that unfold are quite distressing, and the characters look far from placid. Seagulls look peaceful? Ah, but they’re engaged in a fierce battle of “early bird gets the fish.” The morning seems calm to you? The fishermen who get up at wee hours to eke out a living are too sleep deprived to notice. In the film, a desperate young man trying to escape that life serves as a wakeup call and a rude awakening that shatters this facade of calm and peace.
